I've just signed up for this year's NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). I have to admit to not going anywhere near the website since last year and it was really interesting to see how much has changed in a year.
Last year I was a newbie. I'd worked to plenty of deadlines in the past as a journalist and in education but never writing fiction. I could hardly imagine writing a WHOLE book in a month but I did! Matilda's Freedom my 2012 NaNo novel was accepted by Harlequin Escape and released on July 1st 2013.
While it was a fantastic buzz to actually complete the 50k words in a month and see the results published my greatest gain was learning so much about how I write and how to write more efficiently. When I write the dread internal editor perches on my shoulder poking me with red pencils and whispering nasty little comments in my ear but I discovered I could flay him alive with a deadline and send him scurrying into the corner.
Last NaNo I learnt to write without punctuation, without caring how many words I'd written. I just concentrated on the story. After six books I still haven't decided whether I'm a panster or a plotter but I discovered a dirty synopsis was useful. Yes, a synopsis! Needless to say I didn't stick to it but it was useful a security blanket.
At the moment I don't have a synopsis or any other plan for this year's story. I know it is going to be the second book in my family saga From the Ocean to the Outback but that's about all. I've got two weeks to sort myself out and I am determined to get another little sticker that says "30 days, 50,000k words and no excuses"!
Are you coming along for the ride? If you are I'd love to cheer you on so please buddy up and I'll see you in the starting blocks!
Matilda's Freedom is available from all good e-tailers but the prices vary enormously. Currently Amazon is the cheapest at $1.98
